06/25/2012 - Plays in the Park

Plays in the Park, a "professional style" theatre is operated by Middlesex County Parks.  They produce "broadway style" shows for a fraction of the cost.  The trick is, you must bring your own chair, and hope for good weather.  Ticket are only $7. for adults, kids and seniors are less.

Roosevelt Park, just off route 1 in Edison a little south of the Menlo Park mall is home to Plays in the Park.  There is a professional stage and the audience sits on the sloped lawn in their own lawn chairs.

This year they are showing My Fair Lady from June 20-30.  Damn Yankees from July 11-21 and Grease from August 1-11.  All Shows begin at 8:30 PM.  There are no shows on Sunday Nights.

Here's how it works.  You bring your chair to the ticket window, purchase a ticket, place your chair where you want it on the lawn and watch the show.  You can plan on arriving around 8 PM on a weekday to get a decent seat to see a show.  If you want great seats you can try to get there early.  It's a good excuse to spend the afternoon relaxing with your book.  People start getting in line around 1 pm, although the line doesn't usually start to get long till at least 4 pm.  The ticket window opens at 5:30; you can then purchase your tickets and place your seats on the lawn.  Most people leave and go for dinner, you can pack a picnic basket, buy something from the park vendor or head out to one of our great local restaurants.  Try to get back by 8PM so you can be in your seat before the show starts.
