When one thinks about New Brunswick, they think about Rutgers. To the average Rutgers college student over twenty-one, New Brunswick is the ideal city for restaurants, entertainment, and bars. Easton Avenue and George Street are home to many of these establishments. However, off the beaten path there are many great bars including McCormick’s at 266 Somerset Street. McCormick’s is a diamond in the rough. The bar’s appearance from the outside is nothing special, almost blending in with the houses surrounding it, but to this writer it is definitely part of it’s charm. The interior of the bar is pretty basic with dark lighting, beer and liquor signs, and Irish-American themes throughout. I was truly reminded of the “old hole in the wall dive bars,” my father told me about it. They have by far one of the best juke boxes ever with some great eccentric hits. After a few pints who doesn’t want to blast Andrew W.K.’s “Party Hard.” That combined with a great pool table, dart board, and old school retro video games makes McCormick’s more than just a sit down and get wasted bar (though no one would complain if you did). When it comes to drinks, McCormick’s is one of my top picks The prices were awesome with cheap pints and pitchers. They have a great selection of bottled beers ranging from the Guinness line to seasonal specialties by select microbreweries. Also, to this writer’s surprise they had root beer schnapps! The only problem I had was Guinness not being on tap. With a name lick McCormick’s that just should not happen! The bartenders were also by far the most hospitable and polite bartenders I’ve come across in New Brunswick. The two bartenders I met, Nick and “Machine,” were very attentive with my drink orders and had no problem making up a cocktail, even obscure orders like nine kamikazes or three German root beers. The overall feel of the bar was very warm and inviting. For new college students looking for a real hangout and a bar to become “regulars” at, McCormick’s is a great choice. This is one bar that has it all, great and CHEAP DRINKS, great staff, cool locals, awesome atmosphere, live shows, and did I mention CHEAP FOOD most nights? You just can’t beat it. This writer is definitely looking forward to their St. Patrick’s Day celebration.
